Namibia, the last African country to gain independence, is home to one of the most iconic trees there, the quiver tree. The tree grows only in the extremely arid conditions of Africa. Every time the thirst died down and life or death was at stake, the quiver tree would suddenly break its limbs, and the growing branches and leaves would break off from the trunk, and the wounds would be immediately sealed, leaving only the scars as smooth as knives. Even when the branches were cut off, their tenacious vitality sustained them for hundreds of years.
